New Academy and new Men's Coach & Academy Director of Coaching

Plymouth Marjon Hockey Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Simon Fenwick as the club's new Academy Director of Coaching and Men's Senior Coach.

The appointment of Simon and the development of the new hockey academy will herald a new venture for Plymouth Marjon and one of the clubs founding members. Simon will be working with Jamie Oxley and other club officials to develop the Academy programme and structure so it can be launched before the start of the season.

The Academy will bridge the gap for young players between junior and senior hockey alongside supporting the progress of players through the England Hockey Player Pathway. Over the past 5 years the club has become the most successful and consistent club for boys and girls in the county at county and sub regional level. The next challenge is for the club to break through to national finals and see more players progress to the regional performance academy and hopefully national age groups.

The academy will be open to boys and girls aged 13-18 from the club and players from outside. As the leading club in the area with the best facilities the club recognises the role it should play to support the growth and development of the game. The new Academy will provide young players with the opportunity to develop if they have the desire, commitment and potential. The programme will essentially run for 12 months of the year.

Fenwick returns to the club where he spent 13 glorious years leading the forward line before leaving to spearhead the rise of Tavistock Hockey Club as player-coach over the past four seasons.

With free scoring Fenwick at the helm Tavistock first team achieved back-to-back promotions earning them England Hockey and Herald Sports team of the year awards in 2016.

Now he will be responsible for the development of a new youth hockey academy for boys and girls aged 13-18 years based at the state of the art Plymouth Marjon Hockey Centre at Plymouth Marjon University.

The academy will enable talented players from the area to receive excellent coaching and sports science support, giving them the best opportunity of progressing to regional performance academy and junior international level.

Fenwick will also team up Jamie Oxley to lead coaching of the men's first and second team squads as they seek to challenge for regional league titles next season.

PMHC head coach Oxley said: "Simon is an extremely ambitious coach who shares the same philosophy as the club.

“He has all the qualities and skills required to deliver the club’s new academy.

“I am also delighted to see him return to the club as part of our new-look men's coaching team as we aim to build on last season's progress."

Fenwick – who has twice represented Plymouth in the national league – said: “I am obviously excited about returning to Marjon.

“Before the move to Tavistock I spent 13 enjoyable seasons at the club and was part the team that progressed from South 1 to gain promotion to the National League.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of returning in a coaching capacity that will involve the men's first team as well as the new junior academy.

“I hope to combine my playing experience with my recent coaching experiences in order to help optimize the club’s ambition of returning to the national league.

“I also hope to enable the club’s younger players to develop and will support them as they progress through to the seniors.

“I can't wait for the season to get started!”

PMHC will be announcing more details about the new youth hockey academy over the next month, which will enable players from the club and beyond to join.
