Match Report |
After having an extra week off due to the weather and the fact the game was against bitter rivals and table toppers PG’s, you would have expected the 2’s to come out of the blocks and raring to go on Saturday. This unfortunately was not the case! With Alex Morris mistaking the start time for the meet time and Pete Chevin not being able to get home after work (meaning he was at the game on time just with no kit), meant the new formation was altered before we even began. It was little surprise that PG’s took the lead, a driving run to the baseline pulled back to the penalty spot to be struck into an open goal. PG’s second was similar and the home team found themselves further behind when Jamie Oxley miss controlled an aerial allowing Foxy to score a volley in to the top corner (I hate to say it but it was an awesome finish leaving Nate no chance). PG’s took their foot of the gas and allowed the 2s to get back into the game, another miss control whilst stopping a short corner by Jamie confused the defence allowing him time to slip it to Josh Dale-Burrows to convert coolly under the keeper. This goal before half time gave the home team some hope. With a quick half time team talk another formation change and Alex and Pete now warmed up the second half got under way. After what appeared to be a two footed football challenge Jamie got himself green carded after complaining with the umpires that a short wasn’t given, he proceeded to storm off to the dugout and throw his shin pads in the corner! The turning point for the game followed shortly with the 2s having more possession but not really creating many chances, Alex Morris fired a ball into the D where it appeared to get two touches before hitting the backboard, Steve Wilson and Chris Ryan started the celebrations and a goal was originally given. The PG’s players complained and the umpires got together, a goal was awarded, the PG’s players complained some more and the umpires got together again, the goal was still awarded. The umpire’s final decision being that it had hit 2 players feet one in the D and that they thought it was a PG’s player. The away team were rattled after this and started to lose concentration which the home team took advantage of winning a number of short corners. One of these was converted by John Whitfield on routine number 4, at this point there was only one team in it. PG’s did have a couple of counter attacks and it was on one of these that the home side did suffer a setback, a free hit was drilled into the D at waste height hitting Pete on the thumb and breaking it (it was described as looking like a twiglet before his visit to Derriford, he is alright but unlikely to be able to play next week). Miraculously Jamie had found his shin pads and put them back on since we had got back into the game and decided to come on to replace Pete for the last 5 minutes. It finished 3-3 which was probably a fair result although PG’s will probably be moaning about that second goal for a couple of weeks. Unsurprisingly Jamie Oxley was voted DOD but had to run off to a wedding so no photo I’m afraid. John Whitfield was voted MOM for a strong performance in front of friends and family (who are more than welcome to come and watch again). The pursuit for the first league win 2014 continues... |
